Greetings Classmates

The Lee Edwards Class of 58 Steering Committee has been busy this past month calling 144 classmates to verify correct mailing addresses and phone numbers. We also asked for e-mail addresses which we will use for instant communication between the steering committee and all classmates at large. We are proud to inform you the Class of 58 has to date, the largest e-mail network of any of the following graduating classes at Lee Edwards. Those classes include the classes of 56, 57 and 59. Your Steering Committee has done a wonderful job of contacting all of our classmates who did not respond to the letter I mailed in August of 06 announcing the fact we will have a fiftieth class reunion.

Also, I am in contact with those members of the above classes who are keepers of the class networks.  If any of you need information on anyone from the Classes of 56, 57 or 59, I can contact my sources and get the information for you.

The Class of 58 Fiftieth Reunion Steering Committee met Monday evening, February 19, at the home of Rex and Margaret Redmon in Greenville, SC to continue discussions and plans for a gathering of 58 classmates on April 20, 07 in Asheville at Amici's Restaurant on 900 Hendersonville Road.

Invitations for the gathering will be mailed within the next two weeks to all classmates living in Western North Carolina (Franklin to Hickory) and Upstate, South Carolina (Spartanburg/Greenville). The purpose of the meeting is certainly two-fold. First, we have the opportunity to gather for a short mini-reunion to reunite with old friends for a few hours, and second, to allow those who wish to volunteer as helpers for the Fiftieth Reunion in 2008 to sign up with a committee of their choosing.

Areas in which a classmate can volunteer to help are;

1. Location Committee chaired by Anne Beckham Ewald,
2. Food Committee chaired by Jennie Lazenby Padgett assisted by Morgan Pritchard, 3. Decorations Committee chaired by Jo Anne Chandley Elliott assisted by Elaine McPhearson,
4. Setting Up and Tearing Down--need chairperson
5. Registration & Greeters--need chairperson
6. Memorabilia to sell--need chairperson
7. Program and Entertainment-Chairperson Rex Redmon
8. Other such as mailings, directories, videos, etc. need chairpersons

It is the goal of the Steering Committee to make the planning of our Fiftieth Class Reunion a fun time for all those classmates who wish to work on committees. The Steering Committee wants you to enjoy your committee experience and to let it be a memory which you will treasure always.

For those who live in the designated areas mentioned above and for those of you who live outside the designated areas who have asked to be included--such as Betty Ann Ray Richardson who lives in Texas--mark your calendars now for April 20, 1907. The invitations will explain in detail the events of the evening.

Missing Classmates

Written below is a list of those classmates who we are presently unable to contact. There are several for whom we have never had addresses. Also, several more who have moved since the 99 Millennium reunion. Regardless of why they are missing, please, if you know of their whereabouts or know of a relative contact either Rex Redmon at
Redhrex13@aol.com or Pippa Clark Dolen (Class of 59) at Pippadevil@hotmail.com.  Pippa has a rare disease called "findumitus" and she lives to locate missing classmates. We certainly appreciate her help in locating our missing classmates.

Classmates who have never been located are:
1. Mary Joanne Austin Fore
2. Eugenia Leigh Burton
3. Barbara Joan Culver
4. Sarah Toby Glassman
5. Sarah Gosnell
6. Constance Elaine Matthews.

Classmates whose mail has been returned and cannot be located are:

*We know Tom Neal recently moved to the Raleigh area from Asheville.

At some point and time in the future when time allows, we wish to publish a list of those classmates who attended LEHS in the 10th and 11th grades but did not actually graduate with the class. We want to give all former classmates an opportunity to gather together with those whom we shared so many things in common during the "age of innocence"--the 1950s.

Website E-mail address publication:

At this time personal or business e-mail addresses are not going to be published on the Class of 58 website due to concern about web browsers and spam hunters. Many classmates have written asking "not" to publish their e-mail addresses and that request will be honored. However, there is always an exception to the rule. This time, if you insist, and definitely "want" your e-mail address included along with your name, mailing address and phone number on the members page, inform Rex at
Redhrex13@aol.com and your e-mail address will be published and your consent will be saved in a file.

Personal Biographies

During the Steering Committee meeting Monday evening, the committee voted to write and publish a biographical publication on every classmate who is willing to submit no more than a 500 word bio of their lives since leaving LEHS. A 500 word bio is about one page of 10 point type. Bios may be mailed to Rex Redmon, 11 Cantera Circle, Greenville, SC 29615 or written in Comic Sans MS font in 10 point type and e-mailed either as a pasted or as an attachment. This publication will be available to all classmates as part of the reunion paraphernalia. If you wish to have your personal bio published for posterity, you may send your bio any time between now and July 08.

Hello Classmates,

The Steering Committee is in the process of mailing 84 invitations to all classmates who live in Western North Carolina and the Upstate of South Carolina. The mailing will be completed by March 5. We are inviting those classmates to attend a very important gathering at Amici's Restaurant on Friday Evening at 6:00, April 20.  2007. During the gathering, which will include a reception and dinner, we will discuss various reunion options and activities available to us.  We want those attending the gathering to voice their wishes and desires for what they would like to experience for the reunion weekend in 2008. We also solicit opinions from the rest of the class regardless of where you may reside. One little suggestion from each of you, regardless of how big you may think that suggestion may be, enables us put together a long list and plan an enjoyable reunion weekend for The LEHS Class of 58.

Missing Classmates

Our list of missing classmates shrinks each week. Tommy Neal, Melvin Thrash, June McNeely Huntley,  Annette Miller Kirby and Joan Hamlin Davey have been found by our chief detective, Pippa Clark Dolen (Class of 59). Pippa does a great job locating people--and all for free!  No, she receives a gratuitous invite to the reunion. The addresses and phone numbers of the newly found classmates will be added to the members page of the Class of 58 website once a week along with all the individual changes requested by each of you.

The following classmates are still missing and if you know anything about them such as their whereabouts, their family connections or females married names, please contact
Redhrex13@aol.com or Pippadevil@hotmail.com.
We do have some leads on Eugenia Burton. Billie Rogers Stapleton wrote last week and remembered Eugenia married a man by the name of Moseley and moved to Georgia. Now, if she is still married to Moseley, chances are we will find her.

Names of missing classmates

Class of 58 Website

Have you noticed when you click onto the Class of 58 Website how many hits we have? There are 710 hits as of March 4. Thanks for making The Lee Edwards Class of 58 Website a popular hit. Yet, I need news from each of you to pass along for other classmates to enjoy.

For instance, I received a nice e-mail from Martha Ann Fuller Hale today. She says in one portion of her e-mail, I was not surprised to hear Don Printz was a Dr. Don, does that mean you were studious in high school? She closed her e-mail with a small complaint however;
I am freezing in sunny AZ at the moment.

Nancy Drum Clark sent out an e-mail to friends and family last week announcing the fact she and her husband are leaving the "Land the Sky" and moving to Cary, North Carolina. They have family living in Cary and the move is to be near family. Regardless, I'm sure Nancy will find the golf courses in Cary to be just as green as they are at Beaver Lake
(now Asheville Country Club).

Ann Beckham Ewald, one of our sterring committee members writes;
Hi Rex,  I'm back in good old NC and these overwhelmingly beautiful mountains......don't know why I leave in the first place.   Daughter and I left 70 degree weather in Charlotte to fly into freezing temps and worse wind.  Anyhoo, it is great to be back home. (No mention of where she and daughter have been.)  Anne informed me she had been to New York where it was very cold.  I can only imagine.

Lee Edwards Class of 58 Steering Committee met Tuesday evening, March 13, 2007 at the Hendersonville Country Club for a dinner meeting co-hosted by Patsy Farmer Jones and her husband, Dr. Don Jones who are members of the club and who live in Hendersonville. Ken Cooper, who lives in Greenville, SC, was also co-host. Following a brief time for socializing, Patsy, Don and Ken treated those steering committee members in attendance to a wonderfully delicious meal. Moderator Rex Redmon, Patsy Farmer Jones, Morgan Pritchard, Jo Ann Chandley Elliott, Elaine McPherson, Jennie Lazenby, Ann Beckham Ewald, Ken Cooper, Jo Anne Dalton Vaughn and Pippa Clark Dolen (Class of 59) attended the meeting. Sidney and Vera Mitchell were taking a short sabatical to the beach to escape hammering, sawing. and sawdust from having their home remodeled. Spouses of Rex, Patsy, Morgan, Jo Ann Chandley Elliott, Elaine, Jennie and Ann were also present.

Rex and Ken reported checks for the April 20 class gathering at Amici's Restaurant on Hendersonville Road in Asheville were beginning to arrive. (A note to remind those from Western North Carolina and others who requested invitations, your payment for the dinner must be mailed to Rex or Ken by April 6. The steering committee needs an accurate headcount of those who will attend the meeting and the restaurant also needs a count. That is why we requested an RSVP and payment in advance.)

April 20th gathering schedule

6:00 Reception and Socializing--light Hors d' oeuvres*
6:45 Dinner
7:30 Short Ice breaker program
8;15 Reunion discussion
9:00 Adjournment
(Cash Bar available with two drink limit)
Cost $30.00 per person--Make checks payable to LEHS Class of 58 Reunionand mail by April 6 to Rex Redmon or Ken Cooper. (Addresses are on the invitation).

Pippa Clark Dolen, our chief detective who is locating missing classmates, reported
her search is going well. Removed from the list of those who are missing is Sarah  "Jane" Melvin. (See members page for her address and phone number.) Thanks Pippa for all your hard work and dedication for the Class of 58.

Pippa and the steering committee still solicits your help as we attempt to locate the following missing classmates. Perhaps you know a relative, a friend or have some connection or if you have any lead you could sen our way, any tidbit of information is helpful.

1. Mary Joanne Austin Fore
2. Eugenia Leigh Burton Moseley (previously we did not have her married name)
3. Barbara Joan Culver
4. Sarah Toby Glassman
5. Sarah Gosnell
6. Constance Elaine Matthews
7. Charles Robin "Bob" Baskerville
8. Robert "Bob" Lee Robinson
9. Jerry Wayne Sharp
10. Emily Osborne Anderson

Sometime during the coming months, we are going to begin a search for those former classmates who only attended the 10th or 10th and 11th grades at LEHS but who, for whatever unknown reason, did not graduate with the class. The Steering Committee wants to include all those former claswsmates in our fiftieth reunion festivities.

Also, a big "thank you" to those of you who are volunteering to work with various committees. Your interest in your graduating class reflects a very positive attitude and we appreciate your enthusiasm. Plus, your expertise is greatly appreciated.

As a result of your interest and enthusiasm , Our working committees are beginning to take shape as well. Anne Beckham Ewald is chairing The Reunion Location Committee. Ann is given the task of finding locations for the Friday Evening gathering and The Saturday Evening gathering. As a reminder, we tentatively plan a casual gathering Friday evening for the benefit of all classmates to socialize and reunite while enjoying Bar-B-Cue type food and a short program. Saturday evening will be more upscale with a dinner and dance and a special program will be planned. Any suggestions for locations are certainly welcome. You may contact Ann at
PADDIBOO@AOL.COM

Jennie Lazenby Padgett, assisted by Morgan Pritchard, will make sure we have delicious food to eat during the reunion weekend. They will also work hand in hand with Ann Beckham Ewald. Contact Jennie at
jlcdesigns@aol.com and Morgan at GPritc1057@aol.com if you want to help with food selections and for your suggestions or comments.

Elaine McPhearson and Jo Ann Chandley Elliott have agreed to take care of decorations for our reunion events.  Both ladies have a world of experience in the decorating field and we expect them to smother us in Maroon and Black. We can also expect a sample of their expertise at the April 20 gathering at Amici's. If you wish to assist Elaine or Jo Ann, please contact them at
EMcpher994@aol.com and at joaelliott@charter.net.

Other committees such as Registration and Greeting, Programs, Entertainment, Memorabilia, publicity and mailings need chairpersons and volunteers. Sign up now or on April 20 and work on your favorite project. Contact Rex Redmon at
Redhrex13@aol.com.

During the April 20 gathering we will decide on which weekend in 2008 we want to hold our reunion activities. Look at your Calendar for September, 2008, and help decide which weekend will be satisfactory with you for the Class of 58 to reunite. The final decision will be made by popular vote.  The Steering Committee is checking with the events planner at the Chamber of Commerce in Asheville to see what other events are already planned for September 2008. We are contacting the Chamber to hopefully avoid conflicts with other events already scheduled.

Thanks to all of you who continue to contact your web host with complimentary comments.  Frank Fishburne and Dr. Don Printz send their greetings to everyone. Morris Dillingham sent me some oldies music from the fifties--Boy that music takes me back to the school dances that were held in the girls gym at Lee Edwards High.

An invitation from the Class of 57 has been extended to our moderator of the Steering Committee to attend a luncheon in Asheville at the Olive Garden on Tuesday March 20. The Class of 58 is presently networking with the Classes of 56 and 57 to share class news, addresses of classmates, and most importantly, to create a line of communication between the three classes for the purpose of uniting those of us who once attended LEHS together and shared the age of innocuous. Pippa Clark Dolen reports the Class of 59 is also in the process of looking into the possibility of establishing a Class of 59 website.

As your Class of 58 websitehost, I am going to include on our index page the various website addresses for the Classes of 56 & 57. Posting the website addresses should be completed by March 20. An interesting comparison can be made with the Class of 57 with regard to our deceased classmates. While we have knowledge of 59 deceased classmates, the Class of 57 has knowledge of 57 deceased classmates.

Also, I will establish a newsletter archive on the index page for the purpose of maintaining a history of our newsletters. I receive a new e-mail address every ten days or so and those classmates will in the future have the opportunity to catch up on past class news.

We have received over 900 hits to our Class website. Thanks everyone for supporting the Class of 58 website

I will conclude this week's newsletter by telling you my wife, Margaret, and I had a nice visit with Nancy Drum Clark on Tuesday, March 13. We were in Weaverville for a planning committee meeting for Margaret's High School Class reunion from Rutherford/Spindale Central High. Nancy is not without some regret about her move to Cary, NC, later this year, yet, she is optimistic about the possibilities of moving there. She sends her greetings as does Nancy Young Hunnicutt with whom I had a nice chat on the phone while we were visiting the mountains.

This concludes the Class of 58 news for March 2007.

                     Maroon & Black Threads
                        April 2007  (Greenville, SC)

Greetings Classmates,

The Steering Committee of the Class of 1958 sends salutations and good wishes for good health and peace of mind to all our classmates located pratically in every state in the Union plus Hawaii (Gwen Richardson and Paul Thomas) and The Netherlands (Lucy Eaton).

I hope everyone has survived the ill tempered weather we have experieced across America for the past two weeks. Today, in Greenville, SC, we are experiecing gale force winds with gusts up to 40 and 50 mph. This is a good day to stay inside and catch up on paperwork.

Final plans for the Asheville Rally on Friday evening the 20th of April are taking shape. As of this writing we are expecting 46 guests for a 6:00 reception followed by a wonderful dinner at Amici's Restaurant in Asheville. During the rally, we expect to confirm Reunion Dates, Reunion Events and recruit volunteers to work on various committees. Results of the rally will be posted the week of April 22nd.

Elaine McPhearson, Jo Ann Chandley Elliott and Anne Beckham Ewald have gathered some neat door prizes to be given away at the rally. In addition, Elaine and Jo Ann are responsible for adding some black and maroon color to the festivities as they are preparing decorations for the room where we will hold the rally. LEHS school spirit is still alive and kicking today. Why, we might even sing the school song if anyone remembers the tune. It will be printed on the program.

Our missing classmates list is now down to only "five" lost souls. Eugenia Burton, Mozley, who has been missing since the 1983 reunion, was feeling nostalgic a couple of weeks ago and typed her name and Lee Edwards High School into a search engine on her PC and low and behold up pops the Class of 58 Website and she discovers she is among the missing. A sampling of her e-mail says,
Hi, I am Eugenia Leigh Burton Mozley. I have been thinking about my past so much lately and was thinking about Asheville and how I loved that city. I have so many times wondered about (class) reunionsm etc., but never received anything and didn't really look into it myself. Today Asheville was on my mind and so I typed in my name ond school on the internet and WOW, I saw all this information...(Class of 58 Website) It is Awsome!!

After I responded to her e-mail she replied, Thank you for responding Rex, I feel liek I belong again.

Another classmate wham we have been trying to reach, but have failed in our attempts, is George Holmes. This past weekend I received an e-mail from George. He said, Just stumbled over the Class of 58 website and thought I'd update your files. George informed me he spends his winters in Cullowhee, NC and his summers are spent on a farm on the plains of Michigan. He says,
Thanks for the good work, I'll keep up with the site and I'm leaving tomorrow (Monday) for a run up to Michigan.

Isn't it incrediable how fate intervenes sometimes. However, a minister friend says, there is no such thing as fate. He says we experience, God incidents. OK! I'll take those too.

Malcolm Sorrels has joined our Class of 58 e-mail network and will be attending the rally in Asheville on the 20th. Malcolm, John Watkins and John Connelly were among my first friends at DAvid Miller. By the way, does anyone know of the whereabouts of John Connelly? He left Lee Edwards before graduation.

Also eliminated from the list of those classmates who are missing are, Bob Baskerville, who our chief detective, Pippa Clark Dolen, (Class of 59) found living in Hendersonville. We hae not contacterd Bob yet because his phone number is not available. Pippa also confiremd the correct address for Jerry Sharp who lives in Westminster, SC. As I have said before, Pippa has a little known disease called, "Find-um-itus", and she enjoys helping various classes at LEHS locate missing classmates. Pippa also informed me fellow classmate, John Price, who lives in Madison, CT, has assisted her with her efforts. Thanks John. We appreciate your effots too.

The five remaining classmates who are missing are:
Mary Joanne Austin Fore, Barbara Joan Culver, Sarah Toby Glassman, Sarah Gosnell and Constance Elaine Matthews. Perhaps some of you might know a relative or remember who Barbara, the two Sarahs and Elaine married. These five women have never been located since we left high school and what a find it would be to locate them. Perhaps another God Incident is waiting just around the corner and they will suddenly emerge from hiding.

I am happy to report we now have 145 classmates in our e-mail network system. Thanks to each of you for sharing yuor e-mail addresses. Again, your e-mail address will only appear on the class website if you request it be published there, as some classmates have already requested.

I will conclude this page of LEHS Class of 58 news for now. Take care! Until next time.

LEHS Class of 58 Reunion Dates Announced...
Friday and Saturday, September 19th and 20th, 2008

Yes, Classmates, it is now time to mark your calendars for the Fiftieth Lee H. Edwards High School Class of 58 Reunion.

Those Classmates from Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina who attended the class rally held at Amici's Restaurant on the Hendersonville Highway in Asheville on April 20th voted by popular consent to schedule our fiftieth class reunion for the middle of September, 2008. According to the Asheville Chamber of Commerce, September is an ideal month for a high school reunion in Asheville.

Patsy Farmer Jones, who led the, "Lets select a reunion date presentation," informed us the summer tourist season is over by September and the fall festival of colors has not yet started. Therefore, hotel and motel rooms will be plentiful in September.

Successful Reunion Rally

The rally proved to be a great success. Including some spouses who attended there were 47 people present who enjoyed the festivities. Elaine McPherson and Jo Ann Chandley Elliot, chairpersons of the Decorations Committee, made the room where we met come alive with the creative use of the school colors. Large helium filled balloons of Maroon, Black and Silver (accent color) were tied and anchored with matching ribbons and floated freely above each table. A large life size maroon banner with the letters LEHS and 1958 to 2008, intended for the head table, hung freely over the door to the entrance of the room for all to see. Maroon and Black Ribbons tied into large bows graced the walls at various intervals adding to the excitement of seeing the school colors again so proudly displayed after so many years.

Folks, I'm telling you, LEHS school spirit was alive in Asheville on Friday night, April 20th. What a wonderful evening everyone enjoyed.
A forty-five minute reception with delectable Hors d' oeuvres preceded the evening festivities which allowed everyone to greet and interact with each other.

Rex emceed the evening's festivities and introduced Don Printz who led us in the invocation followed by Sidney Mitchell, our Senior Class President, who welcomed those in attendance.

Yes, we attempted to sing the Alma Mater before dinner. While there were no choir directors or classic soloists among us to lead us in singing the school song, our classmate and folk singer, Bill Morris, did his best to keep us on key and going forward as we sang the Alma Mater.

The chefs at Amici's prepared a wonderful dinner and it was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Many thanks to Don Printz for negotiating with Amici's for the opportunity to hold our class rally at Amici's.

After dinner, a ten minute computer presentation (played to the background of the song, Lost in the Fifties Tonight), was read by members of the steering committee. The presentation took us way, way, way back to the forties and fifties to reminisce about the things of yesteryear such as Red Rover, Red Rover; Hop Scotch, and You're It--the things from the age of innosence that molded us into the responsible citizens we are today.

Everyone attending the rally had the opportunity to fill out a volunteer form to join a reunion committee as Ken Cooper explained the forms to everyone telling them we expect the committee work to be fun and rewarding. The response was tremendous and beyond our expectations. The Steering Committee received forms from everyone in attendance with one or two exceptions. Thanks to everyone, including spouses, who volunteered to serve the Class of 58.

For those of you who did not attend the rally and want to volunteer to serve on a committee--if you have not already done so--please contact Rex. You will be assigned to the committee of your choice.

Ann Beckham Ewald spoke next and presented an outline of tentative reunion plans for the benefit of those at the rally. The purpose of the presentation was to get general feed back from those classmates in attendance with regard to reunion activities, food and locations.

The general consensus for reunion activities was to definitely have a casual Friday evening affair in an informal setting for reuniting with classmates and reminiscing. Food should be compatible with the setting and programs kept to a minimum.

We will definitely have a guided tour at what is know today as, Asheville High School, on Saturday morning and also have a catered box lunch in the school cafeteria.

Saturday evening's event will be more upscale with a dinner/dance. Included in the Saturday evening festivities will be a "short" program with a color guard presentation, select speakers, and a time to remember those classmates who are no longer with us.

As Friday evening of April 20th wound down, door prizes became the order of the waning evening hour. LEHS Class of 58 memrobelia was offered in the way of door prizes for those attending the rally.

A special thanks to Elaine McPherson, Ann Beckham Ewald and Jo Anne Chandley Elliot for preparing LEHS tee shirts, maroon knit shirts for the gentlemen and white knit shirts for the ladies monogrammed with the initials, LEHS. Selected other prizes were given away as well.

Everyone left the rally with a feeling of renewed school spirit and with great anticipation for opportunities to work on committees.

Classmates who attended the rally were:

Steering Committee members, Anne Beckham, B.L. Coleman, Jo Ann Chandley Elliot, Ken Cooper, Jo Anne Dalton Vaughn, Patsy Farmer Jones, Jennie Lazenby Padgett, Sidney Mitchell, Elaine McPhearson, Morgan Pritchard, and Rex Redmon.

Don Printz, Paul Sheldrick, Paul "Tammy" Powell, Nancy Young Hunnicutt, Carol Anne Freeman, Malcolm Sorrells, Eddie Lynch, Bill Morris, Charles Bradley, Frank Fishburn, Sue Anne Cook Craven, Nancy Drum Clark, Judy Justice Humphrey, Gary Roby, George Couch, Bobby Gray, Gayle Roberts Kelly, Porter Jennings, Pat Bates Davis and Linda Sluder Tandy were other classmates who attended and enjoyed the rally. In addition, seventeen spouses attended the festivities--and several signed volunteer sheets. Thanks spouses for your support.

Pippa Clark Dolen, Class of 59, and the person who is greatly responsible for shrinking our missing person's list, was an invited guest and gave a report on missing classmates.

Your webmaster received news Saturday, April 28, that classmate Helen Katherine McCracken has returned to Asheville to live. Helen's new address and phone number are now posted on the Members Page of this website. Give Helen a call and welcome her home to the mountains. She previously lived in Weekie Wachee, FL.

E-mail addresses are continuously added to the members page of the website. Again, if you want your e-mail address posted to the members page of the website let you web-host, Rex Redmon at
Redhrex13@aol.com know. No e-mail addresses will be posted to the website without your written permission.

A New Web page is soon to be added to the LEHS Class of 58 website. Numerous requests for Class of 58 photos have poured in and as soon as time allows, the new page will be posted. Many classmates are wanting to recollect their former class members faces. Annuals have been misplaced or worn out and the photo page will greatly benefit everyone looking for a particular face.

Also, many pages of the website have been updated. Take a browse through each page again and see whats new. If you have suggestions for improving the website, please let your web-host know about those suggestions. After all, this is the Class of 58 website for your reading pleasure.

A few words to remember classmate, Bruce Campbell...

Carolyn Herman Tarleton:
It is sad to hear of the passing of one of our own. It sounds as if Bruce had a good life and contributed much to his community.

Diane Chambers (Class of 57):
Thanks so much for sending this to information. Bruce was a  good guy.

Eugenia Burton Mozley:
Thanks for notifying us about Bruce's death Rex...he will be missed--he was a good guy.

Jennie Lazenby Padgett: I am saddened to learn of Bruce Campbell's passing. I was looking forward t
o seeing him at the reunion next year. I remember Bruce as an exceptionally nice and cordial person. Our prayers will be with his new bride and family members.

Roslyn Cooley Lewis:
This notice of Bruce's passing is so sad. He was a great guy.

Jo Anne Dalton Vaughn:  I a
m shocked to learn of Bruce's passing. I remember speaking at length with him at the millennium 99 reunion.

Sidney Mitchell:
Rex, this is a great shock. Thanks for letting everyone know of Bruce's passing. He was a great guy and will certainly be missed at next year's reunion.

Ken Cooper:
We speak of friends dying, yet when they leave us, it is always a shock. Bruce will be missed.

Bob Sevier: Thanks Rex for letting us know about Bruce. He was well liked in school and will be greatly missed. I will e-mail, Debbie, his wife.

Class of 58 Trivia Question

Here is a class trivia question for you. Who wore the Maroon Devil mascot uniform for the class of 58? Joel Zeblin comes to mind, yet the thirty classmates attending the rally could not remember for sure.

A Closing Point to Ponder

During high school, we develop the most vigorous adult bodies we will ever have.  At the same time, we possess the least amount of sense we will ever have.  This combination produces many memorable moments!*

Greetings Classmates,

I hope all is well with each of you.  Time is certainly flying by. Do you realize it was 10 months ago (August of 2006) when I mailed the first Class of 58 reunion letter? If the next 12 months passes as fast as the past ten months have passed, this time next year we will be rounding second base heading for third with our class reunion in sight at home base.

Yesterday, Wednesday, as I was preparing an ethics lesson for the adult Sunday School Class I teach part time; the issue of time and being patient as we wait for God’s will to be done, instead of our own will, was one of the topics discussed in the lesson.

The author of the lesson gave an example of one of the things on which we all wait—eating in a restaurant. For example; we wait for a table, then wait for a menu, wait to order, wait for the food to be prepared―and served, wait for the check and finally, wait to pay the check—all, while being served by of all things, a waiter. Go figure that one out.

MAILERS

By now, each of you should have received a mailer announcing the Class of 58 reunion dates which are Friday and Saturday, September 19th and 20th of 2008. The
Asheville Chamber of Commerce suggested we schedule our events in September because the summer tourist season will be over and viewing the fall foliage does not begin until October; therefore an abundance of hotel rooms should be available in the Asheville area. Again, if anyone has questions about the reunion, please contact either Rex Redmon at 864-284-6360 (Redhrex13@aol.com) or Ken Cooper at 864-268-4142 (kencooper@charter.net).  Note; Rex will be on vacation between June 11 and June 23.

Reunion
Locations & Activities

In the meantime, the Locations Committee, chaired by Anne Beckham Ewald, and assisted by Nancy Drum Clark, Frank Fishburn and Bobby Gray, is busy scouting for locations where to hold our reunion events. Locations such as the
Crown Plaza at Westgate, The Renaissance Downtown, The Asheville Country Club (formerly Beaver Lake), Grove Park Inn, Taylor Ranch and the Shriners Club are being investigated by the Locations Committee. While your Steering Committee wants to use facilities that will have appropriate atmospheres for our reunion events, we certainly want to consider the cost of each location as well. We assure you, we will be as cost conscious as possible, yet we want to produce a long remembered 50th reunion event.

As you will recall, we plan for Friday evening to be a casual evening with a minimum of programming. The Steering Committee feels Friday evening should be a time for reuniting and fellowship with former classmates. We plan to have either a prepared dinner or islands of heavy hors d’ oeuvres from which to graze for the evening as we become reacquainted.

Saturday morning is already set in stone. Principal Judd Porter of Asheville High School has assured us he will cooperate in every way to grant us the privilege of touring our Alma Mater. A Class photo will be taken on the front steps of the school similar to the one taken on Friday, May 23, 1958 that appeared in the Asheville Citizen Times on Sunday, May 25, 1958. We are trying to obtain copies of the class photo from the Asheville Citizen Times and if we are successful in that venture, we will offer both photos for sale at the reunion. (Thanks to Paul “Tammy” Powell who found a copy of the LEHS Class of 58 photo in an old trunk in his parent’s basement and sent it to us.) We plan to eat a catered lunch at the school in the new senior lunchroom as the old lunchroom under the auditorium is now used for storage.

Saturday evening, September 20, will be a more formal affair with a sit down dinner and dancing, yet in an atmosphere where we can continue to reunite and have fellowship. We do plan an extended program for Saturday evening which will include a time of remembrance and recognition to those classmates who are deceased.

Thanks to each of you who have either telephoned or sent e-mails suggesting various reunion sights as well as planned activities. This event is for the graduating Class of 1958 and the Steering Committee will do our utmost best to honor your requests while keeping in mind what is best for all concerned.

NOSTALGIC NEWSPAPER ARTICLE

Speaking of the above mentioned class photo that appeared in the
Asheville, Citizen Times on May 25, 1958, an article, Lee Edwards Baccalaureate to Be Held Here Tonight is included on the same page with the photo. The article states some 280 senior candidates are eligible for graduation and lists the names of all those classmates. (Yet, there are only have 265 names on the graduation list).

According to the newspaper article, four classmates spoke at the Graduation Ceremony on Friday evening, May 30th. The first name in the article is not legible due to a fold in the newsprint. However, Don Printz is sure Lucy Eaton Jonckheere was the speaker and Lucy’s topic was, Standing forever, Symbol of Our Love—Our Home. Student body president, Bob Sevier, spoke about All Hail To You—Our World while senior Class president, Sidney Mitchell, chose the topic, Firm In The Knowledge—Our School. President of the National Honor Society, Bill Martin, chose to speak about, Our Watchword To Guide Us—Our Church.

Participating in the awarding of diplomas were the following people. Earl C. Fundeburk, superintendent of Asheville City Schools, Mrs. Don Printz and Mr. Traynham Houston, members of the school board (and parents of two 1958 classmates), principal W.P. Griffith, Dean of Girls Sylvia Airheart and Dean of Boys, Mr. Don Jones.

SYLVIA A. AIRHEART
  1915-2007

I am sure most of you have heard by now of the passing of Mrs. Airheart on May 29, 2007. Mrs. Airheart was living in San Antonio, Texas, with her daughter, Janet, Class of 59. She was 92 years old. She left Asheville 14 years ago to live in Texas with Janet. She was interned at the Mars Hill Cemetery in Madison County, NC. Mrs. Airheart was a wonderful English teacher and a grand lady as well. I know those of us who had her as a teacher remember her with great affection.

CLASSMATE HEALTH CONCERNS

I received an e-mail from classmate Gary Roby of
Asheville a couple of weeks ago. Gary informed me he had a mild heart attack soon after the April 20th rally we held in Asheville and he had two stints implanted. Welcome to the club Gary. We want to continue to remember in our prayers, Brenda Hough Goad who is battling breast cancer and other classmates who are recovering from strokes, accidents, surgeries and additional chronic debilitating conditions. I am scheduled again for vocal cord surgery on June 28th in Augusta, Georgia, at the Georgia College of Medicine.

INDIVIDUAL BIOGRAPHIES

Classmates, I am ready to start receiving your ½ page biographies. Take a few moments please and reflect upon your life over the past 49 years and jot down where you have been, and what you have been doing since you graduated from LEHS. The bios will be condensed into a booklet and distributed free of charge at the reunion next year.
But, I need to begin to collect your bios now. You can send them by e-mail or snail mail. Do not worry about how well you can or cannot write. I’m a half way decent editor and I can correct grammatical errors, etc.

STORY TIME

Classmate Charlie Pruitt is responsible for sending the following story which involves a certain dentist who is a 1958 classmate and also an unidentified female classmate who is a patient.

The story reads; Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old?"  Well... You'll love this tale from a 1958 female classmate of LEHS!

The female classmate says, I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name.  Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class over 49 years ago.  Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, grey-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate. After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville, NC

Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a Maroon Devil, he gleamed with pride.

When did you graduate?  I asked.

He answered, In 1958. Why do you ask?

You were in my class!  I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely. Then, that ugly, old, wrinkled, bald, fat, grey, decrepit son-of-a-gun asked,

    What did you teach?

Now, we know who the dentist probably is, but, the female classmate in question…well, lets let bygones be bygones shall we?

DECEASED CLASSMATES

Sadly I add another name to our deceased Classmate list. I learned today of the passing of Eva Bass Bishop on June 19 of 2005. We now have 63 members of the class of 58 who are deceased.  Thanks to Pippa Clark Dolen, Class of 59, and an advisory member of our Steering Committee for the information about Eva.

LOCATING MISSING CLASSMATES

There were close to 75 people with whom we were classmates in the 10th and 11th grades at LEHS and for various and undetermined reasons, those 75 former classmates did not graduate with the Class of 1958. The Steering Committee wishes to include those former classmates in our reunion events, yet, we do not have addresses for them and neither do we know the married names of the majority of those female classmates. Following is a list of those classmates. Look the list over carefully; perhaps you will know of their whereabouts or know a married name of a females, even better, perhaps you will know a family member whom we can contact. Any information you can give us is more than we have now. Contact Rex at
redhrex13@aol.com or Pippa at Pippadevil@hotmail.com

In addition, we still have four female graduates we cannot locate. They are;
Barbara Joan Culver, Sarah Toby Glassman, Sarah Gosnell and Constance Elaine Matthews. If you remember anything (where they went after high school, any siblings, parents, who they dated, where they lived) about these former classmates, please let us know.

CLASSMATE E-MAIL

Joyce Almon Rowden of
Hendersonville caught up with us recently. Joyce said she appreciated all the informative information on the website and was saddened to read the Memorial Page. She appreciates all of our hard work with regard to the Class of 58. If anyone wishes to e-mail Joyce, I have permission to share her e-mail address.

June T. Ramsey, LEHS Class of 55, wrote to say she had looked over our website on the advice of her cousin, Brenda Penland Davis (Class of 58). She says, “Your class has done a great job with your website, and I sure wish someone had done a follow-up website like your class has done. We had our 50th reunion in 2005 but I can’t find anything on the web except for some photos. Congratulations on your excellent site.”

CONCLUSION

As Bugs Bunny used to say at the end of his cartoons…Ehhhhhh…That’s All Folks!
